Life is short but it's also long
Everybody is familiar with the notion that “life is short”.
There’s certainly something to be said for this idea. We only have so much time on this planet, so being mindful of how limited that time may be helps us keep things in perspective, not sweat the small stuff and take advantage of our time.
But as a therapist, I often hear this line of thinking have an adverse effect on people who are struggling to figure out what they want out of life.
If life is short, then that applies pressure to figure things out before it’s too late!
Something to keep in mind is that like in many areas of life, perspective needs balance.
While it’s true that we should look at life as being short for the benefits listed above, we generally need to give ourselves the time and the space to learn about ourselves, make mistakes and contemplate how we see ourselves fitting in this world.
That’s a process that takes time!
Sometimes, it can be helpful to remind yourself: life is long!
If figuring out what you want out of life is something you struggle with, a therapist can help!
