Mental health is like any other skill...it takes practice!
When seeing a therapist it’s not uncommon for you develop a new insight into yourself but not feel differently.
For example, let’s say somebody feels like they’re not smart but has evidence to prove that they are. When sitting with a therapist, they might identify that this way of thinking is a result of conditioned thinking that was formed in childhood.
But now what?
It’s easy to think, “wait a minute, I know this is maladaptive thinking. I can identify it as such, but why do I still feel like I’m stupid when I know it’s not true”.
There are a multitude of interventions, tools and skills that can be utilized to change this way of thinking! It’s more than just developing a new insight.
However, these interventions and tools need to be practiced. It’s easy to assume otherwise and it would be easier if otherwise were true, but the truth is - learning how to flex a mental muscle is necessary.
Just because somebody understands the mechanics of lifting weights doesn’t mean they can simply lift weights, it takes practice! Mental health operates the same way.
