The pursuit of success...at the risk of what?
Work hard, hustle, put your head down and push through!
This is just some of the feedback we get from society about rising above the pack and obtaining success.
Wasted time? Nope. Make every second count!
With this mindset often comes great accomplishment. But what often gets overlooked is the stress and sacrifice that this type of commitment entails.
The question is, is it really worth it?
Let’s look at the extreme other side of the spectrum:
Nothing really matters. Why sacrifice years of your life for something, for ANYTHING, when you don’t know how much time you have on this planet. Live one day at a time and be present.
But then what motivates you? Why push yourself and try to fulfill your potential?
Unfortunately, there’s no right or wrong answer here. Nobody can blame somebody for buying into either perspective. If I think it’s worth working my tail off for the next 40 years to enjoy my last 30, that’s up to me. If I believe making my mark in a particular field or career is meaningful, whose to tell me it’s not worth the sacrifice?
Similarly, If I decide no profession or craft in the world is worth the sacrifice of committing years of my life to, can’t I chill?
It’s important for people to recognize that everybody’s answer to this question is different. Additionally, it doesn’t need to be one extreme or the other. Like everything in life, balance is often the answer.
If nothing else, give yourself the time to assess what your ultimate goals are and recognize that you’re perspective doesn’t have to be black or white.
If this is something you struggle with, a therapist can help you learn more about yourself to figure this out.
