Let’s talk about it!

Aim to achieve goals but don't define yourself by them

A topic that tends to come up frequently in therapy is a person’s. goals. Everybody has at least some as working towards goals is a part of life. Whether it’s going after a promotion, learning a new skill or going after a degree - goals can be a very healthy thing to look and work towards.

But like most things, you want to find a good balance. It’s really easy not just to pursue a goal but to become enmeshed in it.

When you become too caught up by a goal it can start to define you. When it stars to define you, you can develop an unhealthy internal narrative about yourself when the goal does not work out. The reality is you are more then any goal you might have and it is important to remember that.

Ultimately, both things can be true. You can have a goal that you take very seriously but also recognize that the success or lack thereof does not define you.

If self-esteem or goal setting is an issue for you therapy can help!
