Your mind is like a closet...nobody likes cleaning a closet
In talking to my clients, one of the most prevalent reasons I hear about why it took so long to decide to see a therapist is “why should I talk about things that make me uncomfortable.
On one hand, this is a fair point. If talking about A,B or C is going to make me feel anxious, depressed or unnerved, wouldn’t it make more sense to just leave it? Why dive into content that’s going to make me feel uncomfortable.
Even more so I often hear from clients that they tried therapy in the past but found that they’d leave sessions feeling even worse then they did when they came in. Why should I see a professional to feel worse?
In reality, sometimes therapy is like cleaning out your closet. Nobody likes a messy closet and nobody likes cleaning a closet, but everybody likes a clean closet.
In order to get that clean closet, we need to rummage through and start organizing. While we don’t like the process, we know it’s necessary to get the result we want.
Whether it’s anxiety, depression, trauma or other mental health concerns, sometimes the uncomfortable digging is a necessity to get the relief you’re looking for.
