The frequency illusion
There’s a psychological phenomenon called the frequency illusion.
In a nutshell what that means is that when something is more prevalently on our mind/radar we tend to see it more frequently.
A common example of this is buying a new car thinking it is somewhat unique only to then find that you are seemingly seeing this car everywhere.
Or learning a new word/phrase only to seemingly now hear it often.
The explanation behind this is simply that the more aware we are of something, the more we’ll find ourselves noticing it.
What some people might fail to realize is that the frequency illusion can also apply to our mental health. If we’re looking for a negative outcome or lack of opportunities, it is only natural that is what we’ll notice. Whereas if we’re cognizant to focus on the positive or abundance of opportunities then chances are we’ll notice that more!
